چکیده

The monolithic nature of current middleware platforms is unable to deal with the demands of emerging technologies such as multimedia and mobile computing. In addition, these platforms are sometimes too complex for applications with few resources. There have been some attempts to introduce more flexibility, however, middleware nowadays does not address configuration and reconfiguration issues in a generic and principled way. We believe that reflection provides a principled means to obtain the flexibility and adaptation required. Thus, a reflective middleware architecture is introduced. The main focus of this paper regards the configuration and reconfiguration of resources in middleware. A task model is used to specify the initial configuration of resources allocated to critical middleware services. Hence, time constrained services like video stream communication have their resources encapsulated and isolated to have a better control of them. Reconfiguration of resources may be then achieved by the conjunction of both the reflective facilities of the middleware platform and a consistent resource model at various levels of

Middleware for Building Ubiquitous Computing Applications Using Distributed Objects

Ubiquitous systems are characterized by multi-fold complexity, stemming mainly from the vast number of possible interactions between many heterogeneous objects and services. Devices ranging from simple everyday objects populated with sensing, actuating and communication capabilities to complex computer systems, mobile or not, are treated as reusable “components” of a dynamically changing physic...

Middleware for Smart Environments Management

This paper introduces a self-configuring middleware that manages the processes of context information acquisition and representation from smart closed environments, targeting the development of context aware applications. The environment context information is modeled using three sets: context resources, context actors and context policies. The context model artifacts are generated and administ...

A Knowledge-Based Resource Discovery for Internet of Things

In the sensing as a service paradigm, Internet of Things (IoT) Middleware platforms allow data consumers to retrieve the data they want without knowing the underlying technical details of IoT resources (i.e. sensors and data processing components). However, configuring an IoT middleware platform and retrieving data is a significant challenge for data consumers as it requires both technical know...

iPOJO-based Middleware Solutions for Self-Reconfiguration and Self-Optimization

In recent years, ubiquitous and pervasive scenarios have emerged as a complex ecosystem where differentiated software/hardware components interoperate wirelessly and seamlessly. The goal is to enable users to continuously access services and contents, and to always get the best out of their current environment and available resources. In such dynamic and flexible scenarios, the need emerges for...

A Self-Configuring Middleware for Managing Context Awareness

This paper introduces a self-configuring middleware that manages the context information acquisition and representation processes targeting the development of context aware applications. The context information is represented using three sets: context resources, actors and policies. The context model management infrastructure is constructed using BDI (Believe Desire Intentions) agents that gene...
